The Kahnawà:ke Education Center

In 1980, the Kahnawà:ke Education Center (KEC) was established to administer all locally controlled educational programs and services, previously administered by the Federal Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada and the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke.

In 1988, the KEC assumed complete control over all education programs and services when the administration of Federal schools was transferred to the Kahnawà:ke Combined Schools Committee (KCSC).

With offices in the East Wing of Kateri School, and in the Administrative Support Offices on River Road, the KEC administers and operates three community schools: the Karonhianónhnha Tsi Ionterihwaienstáhkhwa School, Kateri School, and the Kahnawake Survival School.

The KEC oversees all programs and services for Kahnawà:ke students attending elementary, secondary, and other post-secondary institutions within the Greater Montreal Area. The KEC also provides services to Kahnawà:ke students attending programs and services at post-secondary institutions within Canada and the United States, and beyond.

The KEC maintains open lines of communication with Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), in addition to various Provincial school boards that provide education services to Kahnawà:ke students—all of whom ensure that students have access to high quality, culturally-based education programs and services.

The Director of Education and Director of Finance and Administration, along with professional staff, administers the KEC and are responsible for:

  • Curriculum supervision
  • Student assessment and records
  • Professional development
  • Placement and counselling services
  • School administration supervision
  • Computer technology services
  • Finances

Students within Kahnawà:ke are transported to and from the schools by the School Transportation Program, which is administered by the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke
