KEC responds to events of June 18 2019

Kahnawà:ke Education Center (KEC) (Kahnawà:ke, Quebec – 18 Ohiarí:ha/June 2019) –At approximately 9:45am this morning, a group including KEC employees, parents, students, community members, and certain members of the Kahnawà:ke Combined Schools Committee presented themselves at the KEC and requested to speak to the Director of Education Robin Delaronde and Assistant Director of Education Earlyn Sharpe. A letter was read by Kenneth McComber and was signed by Laurie Deer on behalf of students, parents, grandparents, and community members, demanding the immediate termination of Delaronde and Sharpe.

 

The Kahnawà:ke Combined Schools Committee (KCSC) is the only body who has the authority to terminate the Director of Education as per section 2.1.2 of the KCSC Governance Manual:

2.1.2 Authority of KCSC
The KCSC will act as one body in the exercise of its authority. Individual members do not have the authority to act on behalf of the KCSC. Neither the Committee nor any other body can delegate its responsibilities to manage the business of education to any other individuals, committees or institutions.

 

Parents or community members do not have the legal right to terminate any employee of the KEC. As per KEC Human Resources Policy, the only individual with the authority to terminate the employment of the Assistant Director of Education is the Director Of Education. 

 

The KEC respects and values of the opinions of students, parents, grandparents, and community members, however they do not have a right to terminate any employee of the Kahnawà:ke Education Center.

 

The KCSC will be scheduling a special meeting to address today’s events and will be providing a statement following the meeting.
