KEC Announces New Associate Principals for KSS and Kateri School

The Kahnawà:ke Education Center would like to announce the hiring of Associate Principals for Kahnawake Survival School (KSS) and Kateri School.

Wáhiakatste Diome-Deer has been hired as the Associate Principal of Kahnawake Survival School. Wáhiakatste, born and raised in Kahnawà:ke, has studied at some of the top schools in the world such as Deerfield Academy, Dartmouth College, the University of Edinburgh and Harvard University. She currently holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychological and Brain Sciences, and has completed graduate coursework towards her M.A. in Psychology. Extensive work and volunteering experience, both at home and abroad, has allowed Wáhiakatste to develop a well-rounded skill set and perspective that make her an excellent fit for the position. Her professional experience includes, but is not limited to, Post-Secondary Student Advisor at the Dartmouth College Native American Program and most recently, Youth Coordinator at Quebec Native Women Inc.

Wáhiakatste is a visionary; dynamic and determined to create positive change. She looks forward to advancing the vision of the school, is passionate about advancing education in Kahnawà:ke and building a better future for the seven generations to come. As her grandmother, Muriel Deer, was a founding member of KSS, Wáhiakatste feels a deep connection to the school and the work that lies ahead. Wáhiakatste’s position becomes effective on August 13, 2018.

Cynthia Lapierre has been hired as Associate Principal of Kateri School. Cynthia holds a Master’s Degree in Applied Linguistics from Concordia University. Cynthia’s experience in language teaching and staff management, as well as her interest in language revitalization programs will be valuable assets for this position at Kateri School in order to continue the development and evaluation of the school’s language programs. Cynthia’s position becomes effective on August 13, 2018.

“The experience these two women bring to these positions will not only enhance student success, but will compliment an already strong administrative team that is supervised by Earlyn Sharpe, Associate Director of Education for the KEC”, states Robin Delaronde, Director of Education. “In August, both Earlyn and I will be coordinating an intensive 2-day orientation for our administrative team in order to provide them the opportunity to become acquainted, work on school priorities, and review KEC policies and procedures. “
