Kahnawà:ke Education Center to offer Bachelor of Education with McGill University

The Kahnawà:ke Education Center is pleased to announce a Bachelor of Education program in partnership with McGill University that will be offered in the community to eligible Kahnawa’kehró:non beginning in the Fall 2018. The Bachelor of Education program is an intensive 120-credit, university-level program to be offered in the evenings. Graduates will receive a Bachelor of Education in First Nations and Inuit Education, and will be certified to teach anywhere in the province of Quebec.

Teacher training and professional development is a priority with the KEC and schools. Although one of the primary objectives is to fill projected vacancies in the Kahnawà:ke Education System, the KEC continues to support KEC staff and the community in capacity building in order to offer the best quality education to its students.

Over the past year, the KEC has supported 38 teaching staff in Kanien’kéha language upgrading, and 19 staff in French language upgrading (offered by Université de Québec à Montréal – UQAM). Ten teaching staff will be graduating in June with a Certificate in First Nations and Inuit Education from McGill University, with another 8 staff nearly completing the Certificate requirements. Eight KEC and teaching staff are currently working toward Post-Secondary Degrees at the Bachelor, Master’s, and Ph.D levels. The KEC is also exploring Special Education Certification for staff for Fall 2018.

Robin Delaronde, Director of Education confirms that the KEC will continue to collaborate with universities in order to provide credited programs that meet the needs of our community. “The KEC has been and will always be committed to ensuring our staff receive the upgrading required in order to support their professional growth that in turn ensures success for all students,” states Delaronde. “We are proud of staff who have participated in upgrading this past year as well as those who have taken it upon themselves to seek out their own upgrades affiliated with various universities.”

Applications for the program will be available online and at KEC Reception beginning Wednesday, May 9th. Deadline to register is Friday, June 1st at 4:00pm. For more information, please contact Bethany Douglas, Post-Secondary Distance Counselor at 450-632-8770 or Bethany.douglas@kecedu.ca. An information session for those interested in the program will be scheduled later this month.
