The Kahnawàke Combined Schools Committee (KCSC), composed of parents and guardians, two Longhouse representatives, a community representative, and a post-secondary representative, oversees and supports the Kahnawà:ke Education System, including Kateri School.
On January 14, 2026, the Kateri In-School Parent Committee voted unanimously to relocate the Kateri Tekakwitha statue, following discussions that have taken place over several years. The KCSC supports the statue's removal and relocation from Kateri School.
The KCSC recognizes that Kateri Tekakwitha holds historical, cultural, and spiritual significance for many community members, and that perspectives on the statue may differ. As a part of the relocation process, community members are invited to help identify a suitable new location for the statue.
To support this process, the KCSC has retained Plant Consulting to conduct a
community survey. Over a nine-week engagement period, Plant will gather feedback on potential relocation sites through a single-question survey.
Beginning August 24, 2026, surveyors will engage community members, answer questions about the survey process, and collect feedback through:
- Telephone outreach
- Public kiosks in high-traffic areas
- An online survey accessible through a dedicated link
Public kiosks will be held at a variety of locations to encourage participation from community members of all ages and backgrounds.
Community feedback will help identify potential sites and inform the next steps in the relocation process. Following the engagement period, Plant Consulting will provide the KCSC with a summary report of the survey findings.
